I love Stories. I love stories. I don't know how else to say it. I have such an enjoyment for books, plays, and movies. I love stories.
I love reading books. I don't think it's as much as an escapist thing, as much as it is so intensely fascinating to read about something that's not you. I love finding about other people. I love understanding characters. I love trying to figure out what the character is going to do next. I love being surprised by what they do do next. I love the dialog between characters. I love reading other books by the same author and discovering the similarities, and differences. I love being so pulled into a story, that you stay up way later than you should reading by whatever possible light you can get. It's one of the most satisfying feelings in the world. I love reading books.
I love watching plays. I want to live somewhere where I can go to plays on a regular basis. The medium of stage is fascinating to me. Shakespeare, opera, musicals, and classics are really, really cool. I'm dying to see some classics on stage. You can put a book down, you can fast-forward a movie, but on a stage you're stuck. The play lives and breathes on your actors. The actors are everything. The actors alone can make a non-existent stage come to life. The actors can take a not-great script, and make it interesting. How exciting would it be to walk into a play, and be absolutely stunned by the acting? I really want to go see plays. Can you imagine what it would have been like to watch the original Shakespeare plays? Can you imagine what it would have been like to see Lawrence Olivier act in anything on stage? Many movie actors have tried to also try to act on stage, and have been rebuffed. It takes the best kind of actor to carry a stage. I love watching plays.
I love watching movies. I can't help it. I love movies. I freely admit it. I love funny movies. I love serious movies. I love movies that are done so badly you groan. I love movies that are so horrible that you hate them intensely. I love movies where the screenplay is incredible. I love movies with great special effects. I love guilty pleasure movies. I love talking about movies. I love movie marathons-with the right people. I love old movies. I love new movies. I love black and white movies. I love color movies. I love movies with acting so incredible you think about it for days afterwards. I love movies that send a message clearly without being annoying. I love movies that make you want to cry. I love movies that make you laugh hilariously. I love all movies. I don't know how else to say it. I love movies.
What is (my) explanation for why I love all three of these things equally? The story. I love being pulled in by a story. I love being fascinated by conversations, people, skill, and life. I love stories, every kind of story. Give me a story, and I'm happy.

Aren't you glad I couldn't remember number 6 the other day. That would have made for a really long post.
8.
I have also just realized that this equals 11 posts for the month of may. That is as many posts as I had all last year. Just goes to show you what no school can do for you. I love summer.

All the President's Men
I have a deep enjoyment for this movie. I think you should watch it. I think you should make your friends watch it. In fact, I think everyone should watch it.
And no small part of that has to do with Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford.

Roger Ebert says, "When Robert Redford announced that he'd bought the rights to "All the President's Men," the joke in the newsroom was about reporters becoming movie stars. What in fact has happened is that the stars, Redford as Woodward and Dustin Hoffman as Bernstein, became reporters: They sink into their characters and become wholly credible."
Go add it to your ever-growing list. Or actually do something about it, and watch it.

I need to post, so I can get my one post in a week
And like usual, I have no idea what I should post about.
Let's just call this: "Random Joanna thoughts, in no particular order".
1.
I don't know which I hate more (and I've really been thinking about this in the past couple of days). I'm not sure if I hate you trying to persuade me using overt emotionality, or bad logic. I heard both of them - in one day. I was scarred.
On one hand, I would love to say that I hate you most when you try to convince me using bad logic. Bad logic, makes you not even care that you're completely throwing this person's argument away. When I hear bad logic, I almost stop listening. I start composing a list of controversial evidence. I start bringing up examples in my mind. I start thinking about what I would say to them, if I could say anything I wanted too. I start visualizing pictures.(note: this may be too disturbing for some of you - it is offering a picture inside my brain) When I am listening to or participating in an argument, I can see "threads" that connect each point to another point, truth, or example. When an argument is strong the main point (the center that all the threads come out of), the threads interweave, intersect, connect, and travel to other places. But they are always on "top", or "covering" the whole page. That's when you know your argument is strong. When an argument is bad, the main thread is there, but the threads coming out of it are always sparse, and they generally tend to die out after one or two connections. (You can ALWAYS find one at least one connection, for even the worst possible argument). The threads in a bad argument don't travel the way they do in a good argument, and there is always a large amount of "threadless" space. That is a hole in your logic. That is the best place for a good arguer to find. That is where your argument ceases to exist. That is where I stop listening.
On the other hand, overt emotionality turns me off every time. When you start to try to make me cry, we have issues. I have no problem with crying, but I get to decide when, why, and how. You pulling in story after story is only one thread (don't you understand that?) You have only succeeded in telling me a story, not in convincing me of anything. You using a normal everyday story, and drawing crazy analogies from it convinces me not only of your bad storytelling abilities, but also of your bad logic abilities. You appealing to my "moral compass", and my "better nature" for stupid things, makes me want to tell you how stupid I think you are. Oh, and please don't cite stupid people, that is the end of all of your chances.
I really don't know which is worse. But I've been thinking about it a lot.
2.
Some people did something to something that I loved very much, and I had the misfortune to come across it. (Vague, I know). I am now very angry.
They thought it would be funny, but it wasn't, it really wasn't.
They thought they should be applauded, but they shouldn't, they really shouldn't. They thought that it was sending a good message, but it didn't, it really didn't. They thought that they were better, and they weren't, they really weren't.
They thought that they were being "groundbreaking", and all they were being was really, really stupid. Really, really stupid.
3.
I love the freedom of keys, gas, and a car. I love it. I got my drivers license a week ago Thursday. I love it.
4.
I love summer. I had almost forgotten how nice it was to be relaxed. I finished my final for my summer school class a week ago today. This past week has been awesome. I go into work, and I get to work a full day, instead of working, going to school, going back to work, going back to school, sleeping, and going back to work again. Now, I stay at work for my whole shift! Then when I come home, I don't have much going on. So at night, I read, I watch movies, I talk with Philip, I text RuthAnn, I take Bethany to work, I take bike rides, I cook, I go hang out with Mel, I read, I sleep, I watch movies, and I read. I know, it's going to get busier, but this, the end of May-going into June, is summer. Some people don't consider it summer, until everyone is out of school. That's stupid. By July you're more than half-way done with your summer, and you realize you haven't accomplished anything yet. And August, is back-to-school planning. Enjoy the beginning summer days, because they're the best summer gets.
5.
It's 97 days until the NFL kickoff. Do you understand the significance of that? It means we're finally in double digits. (We had a party at work for 99 days. I love my Price Accuracy group).
6.
I had something else that I wanted to add here, but I very definitely forgot what it was.

Quiz Show
I think I've posted about this movie before, but I don't even care. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is genius. Ralph Fiennes is shockingly good. Paul Scofield (quick what other movie was he in, that I've already talked about?), and Rob Morrow, Martin Scorcesse even has an appearance. I know I say this alot, but go watch this movie. Then we can talk. And yes, that's right, Robert Redford directs.

The Queen
I really don't feel like writing....
But I promised that I would try to post at least once a week. And I can't see myself finding the time tomorrow. So here I am. Are you satisfied? Does this count as my post for the week? I didn't think so. I'm not feeling very deep, I'm not feeling very thoughtful, I'm not feeling very funny, I'm not feeling really awake either. I am feeling hungry (if that helps to place my mood). Alright, down to posting business. I need to post about something. Okay, I am posting about the first thing that popped into my head this morning. Are you ready? It's my iron.
I sleep on a bed that is a little higher than a top bunk bed. I'm about a foot and a half from my ceiling. I love my bed. I can jump off and make a tremendous noise downstairs. I can look down when people come in and talk to me. I can lay close to the wall and no one knows I'm there. I also feel tall in my bed which is a feeling I love. But to the iron. When I'm in my bed I am actually looking down on my bookshelves (which are on the other side of my room). And on the left bookcase, closest to the door, on the top of the bookcase, is my iron. It makes the most sense for me to put it there. It's in close proximity to the outlet, the distilled water, and the ironing board, it's even close to the door, so people that want to bother it can stick their hand in, secure the iron, and leave, all without bothering me. The iron belongs there. And yet, every time I rearrange my room, I find myself looking for another place to put my iron. Do you want to know why? (I didn't think so, but I'm going to tell you anyway) It's because of the iron's chord. The stupid iron chord. The iron was given to me as a present. And I love it. I'm obsessive about ironing,(everything looks better ironed)and so to finally have my own iron was great. Plus, this iron is nice, it's got all sorts of different settings, is black and blue, and best of all it has a retractable chord. How perfect is that? A retractable chord, so you never have to be bothered with wrapping the chord around a still hot iron to put it away. (Don't try it, bad things happen) This special retractable chord is the gadget that excited me most about my iron. So, I put the retractable chord to immediate use. Now I am certain, I am positive, I am 100% sure that before I obtained this iron, there were other irons in the house. I know it. But now, somehow, inexplicably, without rhyme or reason, since I obtained my iron all the other irons in the house have disappeared, and we are left with only my iron. This would not be such a problem if it weren't for the retractable chord. Here's my problem. I love the retractable chord, I have no problems with it whatsoever, the retractable chord likes me, I place my finger on the button for the retractable chord and it retracts the chord. I love my retractable chord. My family, however, does not like the retractable chord, for the simple reason, that not one of them, (and I mean not one) can manage to get the chord to retract. It's a miracle. Someone comes in to borrow my iron, and a few minutes later you hear the button being pushed over and over again, you hear the chord being re-pulled out so as to let it go back in easier. And still, every time the iron comes back into my room the chord is still not fully retracted. It's a miracle. I have given constant counsel to my family on how to retract the chord. Most of the time, they listen and then return it un-retracted. Then I lovingly retract the chord and place it back in it's perfect spot. But I always somewhere hope that someday, the iron will come back retracted.
Today I woke up, and the first thing I saw was my iron. My beautiful black and blue iron in it's perfect spot, with it's close proximity to the outlet, the distilled water, and the ironing board. And there, of course, snaking down to hang in front of my books was my iron's un-retracted chord. I give up.
The End
I hope you weren't hoping for some kind of feel-good-analogy for this story like:
"And then I realized that my life is like that retractable chord, hard to manage and annoying, but I just need to be patient with that chord. Because it holds the key to beautifully ironed clothes."
Or:
"And then I saw, not an iron, but a life, a life that is beautiful on the outside, but a life that has one thread, one chord, one something wrong with it, and that's all we look at. That iron wants to be helped, and what am I doing to help it? That life needs help and what am I doing to help it? Retract the chord, people!
Or:
"To make that chord retract not only do we have to be patient towards the chord, and persistent towards the chord, but finally, we have to be persuasive towards the chord."
Or:
"Life is like an iron's un-retractable chord. Hard to get right the first time, but if you keep working at it, with consistent determination and abounding love, that chord will slide right in giving you the perfect iron."
I'll leave that to the fundamentalists.

I feel like people are trying to make me feel that I'm not doing enough
People keep asking me what I'm doing this summer.
And I answer:
"working"
"oh really, that's nice"
"Yeah, I'm excited."
"Where do you work?"
"Where I've worked for the past year and a half." (usually I just insert the name of my glorious job here)
"Oh, huh, that's cool, what else are you doing?"
"relaxing, working, eating, sleeping, reading." (in my joking voice)
"Oh, well that will be nice."
No matter how they say it, I get the feeling that I'm not doing something right.
What do they want me to say?
"I'm going to travel for the school this summer." (that wouldn't be good)
"I'm going to Argentina for a trip." (apparently that fills up your whole summer)
"I'm going to work at a camp. (even camps don't start until June)
Do they want something else, should I be offering more information?
Should I read them my anti-list list of things I want to do this summer?
Should I explain what working means?
Should I explain what summer means?
Should I tell them all of the ministries and activities that I'm involved with this summer?
Should I be in an "organized" ministry/job that they recognize as such, and therefore they can believe that it takes up your whole summer?
Should I be doing something more?
I look at my summer, and it looks full. I see weekends that are already filled up. I see extra jobs/one-time fun things/friend lunches/weddings/church functions/special projects, all throughout my summer. In fact, I don't see a week where something will not be abnormal(from what I would consider a regular summer week). And yet, every time I tell someone that I'm working, I feel like they think I'm not doing enough. And I don't know why that is.

You don't want to know.
I should probably tell you that this is completely random. I don't really know where it came from. I had the greatest reservations about posting this, but I figured you guys know me anyway, so this shouldn't be too much of a stretch for you to imagine coming from me.
A question has been plaguing me for sometime:
If somebody with a popular anonymous blog died, how long do you think it would take before people stopped checking it? Or how many people would comment with those annoying comments,
"Post or I'm going to find you, and make you post."
"Why aren't you posting?"
"You are the best writer ever!!!!! Please bless us with your glorious words again!!!
"Dude, bring the words back."
"Please post again, please, please, please, please, please, please, PLEASE"
"post I red all of your'e writings, I luv them and u bring them bak."
"you idiot-say something."
before they realized that this person was never going to answer? Which brings me to another problem; If one friend knew who this anonymous blogger was, and after the funeral he wanted to let his friends loyal blog-readers know that they needed to move on to another blog, how would he tell them? By posting a comment on his friends blog? And what would that comment look like?
"Dear friends of "insert anonymous blog name here". I am a good friend of "insert anonymous blog name here", or maybe I should say I was a good friend of "insert anonymous blog name here" I regret to tell you that he has passed on into the hereafter. He went peacefully between a truck and a car - and did not emerge so peacefully. The funeral was a great success. I regret to make this matter known to you, because this means that his blog will no longer be used. His last post "Taken with Cheerios" is the last time his words will ever be published. I suggest you take a moment and review some of your favorite posts (may I suggest "Todd and I", "Choo-Choo Train", and of course everyone's favorite "Aloe-Vera for the soul") I hope all of you can take these truths that you have learned from "insert anonymous blog name here" and learn from them. "inset anonymous blog name here" will be greatly missed, and loved, and cherished, and never forgotten. May I steal from this great blogger and close this sad comment with my personal favorite quote, "Pain is ripping through my soul - I search - I seek - I find relief. I look down upon this relief and search for a name - a truth - an explanation for this sweet, sweet relief. And there I see, in my hand, a bottle full of green. And then, I realize that the name, is not all that it seems, the name is just a cover, covering what truth the bottle holds. The name is not important, oh no, the only thing truly important in life - is only the relief - only the feeling of relief. I wonder why I cannot explain it, why I cannot make you understand, I only know what I feel, I only know what I see, I only know the sweet, sweet relief of Aloe-Vera for the soul."
I hope we can all find our own Aloe-Vera to help with "insert anonymous blog name here" 's passing.
To Aloe-Vera,
"insert name of friend of anonymous blogger here"
How many people do you think would actually buy that?
-The above is to be read in a highly sarcastic form.
-Aloe Vera for the soul quotation is to be read with the great poetic voice of Professor G.H. Dorr
I'm disturbed by myself,

A Man for All Seasons

This is one of the greatest movies of all time.
5 Reasons:
1: It's true - movies that revolve around a true story always make you slightly more interested. (At least that's the case for me)
2: The cast is incredible!
We've got Paul Scofield as Sir Thomas More:

Incredible actor - he died this year. Philip, RuthAnn, Bethany and I were heartbroken.
Robert Shaw as Henry VIII:

Actor from Jaws, From Russia With Love, and The Sting
Orson Welles even has a cameo as Cardinal Wolsey.
Not only are the actors great, the acting is fascinating. You watch the story unfold, knowing how it will end, how it has to end, and yet when it ends, you can't help but hurt.
4. The screenplay and dialouge is awesome.
5. The camera angles are telling.
Favorite line, "I trust I make myself obscure."
Watch the movie. I don't have anything else to say.
Movies
I'm learning new things.
I figured out how to add an image to my blogs - happy times.
I'm very excited about my new knowledge.
Over the summer, I would like to show you some of my favorite movies. Well I can't show you, but you should watch them, because they're all good. I can give you pictures, and my personal movie reviews.
Enjoy,
Joanna
Afterthought - these picks are NOT in any particular order. Wait, that's not true. These movie picks are in the order that I think, watch, talk or am reminded of.
